Hi! I'm Crystal, your friendly neighbourhood guide!
Feel like talking to someone or need some help? I'm your gal! I enjoy helping people, talking to people on the TNO forums, going on Neopets, and talking to people in general. If you want to chat, go ahead and contact me!

How do I get started?
The very first step in fostering with TNO is to become a Billo Gold foster parent. Becoming a Billo Gold foster parent will allow you to register your pets in the orphanage, and many other opportunities. The very first step in becoming Billo Gold is to head over to the Academy and read the syllabus!
Next, fill out the Registration Form for your adoptee's species to give him/her a room in the Orphanage (this posts your pet in our listings). Your contact username must be able to receive neomail, be the name you're in TNO with, and be active enough to receive requests to adopt your pet. If you choose to create another seperate foster account, send in the username you're signed up with Billo Gold on. Only members of TNO may board adoptees at the Orphanage.
Note: Please keep in mind that your pet may be removed from the listings at any given time due to inactivity or complaints from those requesting to adopt from you, so please be active and respond to all neomails about your pet, even if it is to reject -- three strikes, and your pet's out, unless you have a good reason. You may not sell your pet or adopt out in return for items/NP/services.
Remember that there is an Adoptee Checking staff. They go about checking your adoptees each week to see when you've last logged in on your contact username, whether or not you can receive neomail without neofriending, and whatnot. This is to keep the listings tidy of inactive foster members.
Lastly, take care of your adoptee -- most of the time, this means feeding and healing him/her since they're usually left for dead at the Pound.... Play some games, and maybe enter a few contests together. You could also write a story or poem about your little friend, or draw a picture. Have fun! But don't forget -- he/she's counting on you!
How can I help my adoptee?
There are lots of things you can do for your pet. First off, make sure their health and hit points have been brought back up. Visit the Healing Springs first. You can also buy Healing Potions and medicine yourself at the Shop Wiz.
Next, the hunger level. The Healing Springs may also help in this, but you can also hop down to our Mall for food, depending on rank. Don't forget your daily Omelette and Jelly!
Advertise your adoptee constantly, and make sure they have a room at the Orphanage -- it's a place where they can share their stories with other orphans, and feel loved.
These are some advanced things you could do for your pet but definitely not required: zap them, raise stats, increase intelligence (read to them), paint them, equip them, give them a Petpet, earn them a trophy, pretty up their lookup/petpage, and more. Again - tons of items are available to fosters in our Mall Shops! But if you look around both Neopets and the Orphanage, there are some ways to help some of these things along.... Having "extras" to list with your adoptee at our site helps!
What is the Lab Ray? How do I use it?
The Lab Ray is a device you can use once a day on any one of your Neopets. The results are random, but can end up helping your pet if you have patience.
Every zap can raise/lower a stat by 1-5 points, raise/lower your pet's level by 1-5 points, change species, change colour (yes, even to Darigan or Faerie), change species and colour, or change gender. (The Lab Ray is also the only way to change a pet to Robot.) The Lab Ray can not rename your pet, raise/lower intelligence, lower stats/level below 1, raise/lower Faerie ability levels, raise/lower happiness levels, give items/NP, or feed your pet.
To get access to the Ray, you have to have all nine pieces of the Secret Laboratory Map. You can get these by buying them in other people's shops, at the Trading Post, or in the Auctions, or waiting for Random Events (though that could take a while...). Getting all the pieces is not cheap, but you'll get a free zap a day for the rest of your Neopian days, and you may never have to train/paint your pet again! It's up to you. Once you have all the pieces go to the Neopets Treasure Hunt with them in your inventory, and presto! You've got access to the Secret Lab!
Warning: Once you have gone to the Treasure Hunt page with all the map pieces in your inventory, the pieces automatically disappear forever. You can only have access to the Ray on the account you assemble the pieces on. So make sure you're on the account you'll be using the Ray on before going to the Treasure Hunt page. Otherwise, you'll have to get the pieces all over again to assemble on the right account!
- Mention them in your lookup with a message like "Joukii is up for adoption, please neomail me if you're interested!" and add a Foster Badge
- Add a Shop Event or just mention and link to your adoptee with a picture of them in your shop description -- don't forget to stock plenty of items below Shop Wiz prices or no one will see your message at all!
- Mention them in your Trading Post descriptions as a side note (but don't offer items for adopting)
This is good for if you have multiple adoptees or if they're always changing -- that link will always list your current adoptees! You can even use this banner (courtesy of abgn; remember that Neopets does not allow offsite linking):
Try to be creative in getting people's attention. And always be careful of what kind of attention you're getting for your adoptee. You want to get the attention of an owner that won't ever abandon or neglect your pet. If you have questions or want to share/see more tips, head to our Fostering Tips forum!
Why isn't my pet listed on the site yet?
We get a ton of new adoptees each and every day to update and board at the Orphanage. Please have patience if your pet isn't up right away. If it's been a week, then something probably was wrong with your pet's registration -- such as pet name/username spelled wrong, not a member of TNO, your pet was sick or didn't have any HP, inappropriate pet lookup, etc. Please check to make sure all was in order before trying again. Find out when the last time the adoptees were fully updated was on this page -- if you sent a form in before the date of last updating, something was definitely wrong with the form you sent.
You can also post on the Adoptee Ads forum in the meantime! If your pet did not get put up for any of the reasons mentioned, you will probably not be contacted, so check the listings often for your pet.
We do not (and probably never will) automate the process because of several reasons:
a) It's impersonable and feels like we're treating the pets like tradeable items.
b) Since we don't focus on just painted pets, we need to let foster owners list "extras" (like stats, BD-equipped, added petpet, intelligence, etc.), and so we'd need to monitor the messages anyway to make sure it's not indecent.
c) We have better management of boarded adoptees.
d) We have better firsthand views on members who foster.
e) We can more easily do farewells from foster members to their adoptees.
How do I choose the best owner?
Good question! You've gone through a lot of trouble to help this sweetheart of yours and he/she'e been through heaps more being abandoned and all -- they deserve the bestest darned owner you can find (other than you, of course, hehe)! If you're getting lots of requests for your adoptee, don't be afraid to be choosey. Stay away from those who say nothing but: "Can I have your painted pet?" or "Joukii's real pretty, can I please have it?"
First of all, your pet has a gender. Second of all, he/she has a name. And third of all, where's the love? Do the above requests sound like they actually care about taking care of your pet? Nope!
If you're absolutely tired of getting terrible and insensitive applications, please refer as many people as you can to the Request Evaluators! These lovely people actually help requesting new owners write better applications. They don't actually write any part of the application for them -- just give them advice to make them a lot better (more info here). To see how each person has been helped, search for their username in the public log.
It's also a good idea to do a background check on the person requesting. But remember that some "Newbies" may in fact be oldies on a new account. And who's to say a Newbie can't take good care of your pet? Who's to say that a person not a member of TNO can't be a good owner? (I mostly adopt to non-members because most TNO members foster and aren't looking to adopt anyway.) Why not ask a few questions? Have them take our Pledge of Good Ownership. Check out the pets they already have for clues -- usually, if the person's got well-cared for pets already, they're keepers. You can also check if the person has a well-off shop, plays lots of games (check the scores), gives their current pets nice lookups/petpages, and more. Hunt around for what's important to you.
If you have questions or want to share/see more tips, head to our Fostering Tips forum! Got an application you're unsure is worthy? Post it! (But please leave out the username for privacy purposes.)
How do I adopt out?
Well, you have two options now! Make sure the account your foster is going to is older than 4 months old, otherwise they may not be able to adopt your foster pet if he or she is Level 2 or higher, or is painted any color other than a basic one!
Option 1: Direct Transfer
The first option is the safest and best way to adopt out your fosters:
With the reopening of the Neopian Pound in April 2008, TNT gave us the option of using the transfer option to safely move a pet from one account to another. This will be your best and most safe option of sending your foster to his or her forever home! It only costs 1000NP and is well worth the wait to ensure that your foster doesn't get nabbed by a pound-sitter.
You simply enter in your PIN number (don't tell anyone else what it is, ever) and click on the transfer button under your foster's picture. This will prompt a small window to pop up and it is in this new window that you want to paste in the account name of the person you picked to receive your foster. Make sure you've got it spelled correctly, though! If you send your foster to a wrong account, that person may not be nice enough to send it back.
Your foster's new owner will have three days to accept or refuse the transfer. During this time you will not be able to adopt or create (not that you'd probably want to create a new pet, right? *pokes pound*) any pets.
If you've already made a transfer this month on the account your foster is on, you may decide to go with the second option of adopting a pet out, but we highly suggest waiting until you're able to use the safe transfer again.
Option 2: Pound transfer
I strongly suggest having the new owner read our Adoption FAQ before the process as it will increase the chances of a successful adoption tremendously.
Please please please do meet the owner in on an instant messenger like AIM, ICQ, or MSN Messengerbefore letting your adoptee back into the Pound instead of just using neomail. (I use Trillian because it includes all the above and more.) The people waiting at the Pound are ravenous. ;P
Step 1: Make sure the person has enough NP on hand to adopt. The Pound fee depends on the level/stats of your pet, so adjust accordingly. Find out exactly how much.
Step 2: Alrighty, now go to the Disown page (you'll need 250 NP yourself to disown), and click on the button below the pet you're adopting out until it says, "Oh please nooooo!" (Sniff....) Once there, don't click anymore! It's the final click before they're disowned. Make sure the new owner has the pound window open and has typed in your foster's name into the search box so they get the next window with this url:
Step 3: Tell them to keep refreshing that page quickly when you say so. Counting down slowly from 3 then saying "GO" a couple seconds before disowning is a good idea. The rest is up to you -- good luck! (And don't forget to update us on what happened!)
Tips: Adopt late at night (NST) -- not as many people are online, plus your internet connection will probably be faster. Make sure other person gives you their undivided attention.
Here's a little bit of advice. Keep a separate browser window open with the adoptee's profile in it, and refresh every couple seconds to see if he/she is still in the Pound. Give the new owner a bit of time to adopt, but if it's taking just a little too long, you might want to adopt the orphan back and try again the next day. Something may have gone wrong on the other end (not enough NP on hand, spelled the pet's name wrong in the search engine, or a stalled connection).
Disclaimer: Please remember that direct transfer is always the best way to move a pet from one account to another. TNO is not responsible for a pound transfer failing. Once a pet is placed in the pound, it is available for any other user refreshing there to see and adopt.
What can I do about a "lost" pet?
There is no longer any way to leave a note on your pet's lookup or petpage - Neopets automatically removes those when the pet is dropped in the pound. You can still point the accidental owner to your ad in our listings or the Adoptee Ads forum -- they both have timestamps, proving you didn't just post them. Plus, you can't update the ad in our listings, so that's also proof that you didn't just post it as a scam. You can also equip a few cheap items on your pet and tell them you can name exactly what you equipped to prove you were the original owner. This also works for reading books or equipping a petpet named TNO Adoptee, but both options cost more than BD items, like snowballs.
Ask the new owner (politely) to have the pet back (please) and mention whatever evidence you have (mentioned above). If they refuse to return the pet, there is nothing else you can do, except be happy for your adoptee that they've gone to an owner who really really won't give them up -- and that's really the point of the Orphanage anyway. Do not attempt to buy the pet back in any way! In fact, it is a freezable offense to sell Neopets.
There are a few with absolutely no shame who will deny the obvious proof. Don't even bother with them -- just let karma do its thang. Also users under 13 who can't receive neomail at all are a lost cause, sorry....
If you're one of those people who feels really guilty, and needs to pay the intended owner back, let me just caution you. Oftentimes it leads to bad mojo, even scamming. If you explain to them that the pet's still in a good place, and that it wasn't your fault, but you're sorry, it's usually enough. You were already doing a really nice thing by giving them an awesome pet anyway. Please don't feel obligated to do more unless you know the person.
