Species + Name
Before you rush off to the pound you must realize that fostering pets takes time and NP. So I suggest, to begin with, you start with just one foster pet.
Species
If you do not have the lab ray then I suggest you choose one of the more popular species. If you do have the lab ray, chances are the species will change anyway so I suggest you choose one of the less popular species, to give them a chance at a better home.
Why do I say this? As a foster parent your job is to make a pet more appealing to a prospective owner. Without the Lab Ray, you will have a difficult time finding a good home for some of the less popular species. Parents with the Lab Ray turn the Tuskaninnys and Buzzes into species which more people like, such as Shoyrus and Unis.
Name
For some people names are very important, for others less so. In any case I suggest, if you are a fledgling foster parent that you choose a foster pet whose name is not rude or horrible in anyway. Yes, pets with bad names need our help just as much as those with lovely names but they should be left to the more experienced foster parents.
If you have the Lab Ray, choosing a pet whose name includes the species can be a bad idea. After zapping you might have a lovely lenny called FishStix or a cute koi called BirdBrain. I made that mistake and ended up with a meerca named FernyUni!!
Gender is also a problem when it comes to the Lab Ray. Whilst some names are unisex and can apply to a pet of either gender others are not. I am not saying that your pet will never ever find a new parent, only that his or her chances are lowered if he is a boy named Daisy or a girl named William.
