Color + Wellbeing + Intelligence + Statistics + Extras
Now that you have rescued a pet from the pound you can concentrate on how you are planning to improve him or her.
Color
Remember that most people wish to adopt painted pets. You are very unlikely to find your foster a new home if you are not prepared to paint him or her. This may seem unfair. But consider it from the prospective owners point of view... how much easier it would be to create a pet or go to the pound and adopt an unpainted pet, than to apply for one from a foster parent who may have lots of rules and requirements.
Using the lab ray is the most obvious means of painting your foster pet and the majority of serious foster parents have saved up for this. Using brushes is extremely expensive.
Health, Hunger & Mood
Most pets in the pound are hungry and/or sick and some have less than maximum health points. These are easily taken care of. Remember your foster pet cannot be entered in the listings if he or she has any illness. Playing games with your foster pet as well as giving them food to eat and toys to play with can make them happier.
Intelligence
The majority of pets in the pound are of average (10) intelligence. You might want to increase this to at least bright (14) by reading a few books to them.
Statistics
A lot of pets appear to be abandoned because their stats are poor. Visiting Coltzan's Shrine or enrolling your neopet in The Swashbuckling Academy and the Mystery Island Training School will increase your fosters Level, Strength, Defence, Speed and Endurance. Remember though, for most prospective parents stats are of less importance than other aspects of the foster pet so don't spend too much money in this area.
Wearables, Abilities, Equipment and Petpets
Wearables can really make a pet shine, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind before dressing up your foster pet. Not all wearables can be transferred with a pet: No Neocash items can be transferred, and although you might get a variety of clothes from the lab ray, only those paintbrush clothes belonging to the pet's current colour can be transferred with them. If you do decide to dress your foster pet up, it's best not to spend a lot of neopoints on it, as most new owners really want to choose these items for themselves.
Abilities and Equipment will only appeal to Battledomers, and then not nearly as much as a pets color and stats. Remember too, that equipment doesn't go with a pet when they're transferred. You would have to give the equipment to the new owner as a seperate item transfer. Even if you do equip your pet chances are, unless you are an avid Battledomer yourself it will be with something useless that no self respecting fighter would be seen dead with ^_^ So do this sparingly.
However many foster parents feel that getting their foster a petpet is a great way to encourage prospective owners to choose their pet over someone else's. Some feel that giving their pet a petpet will keep them happy while in the foster home. On the other hand, other foster parents feel that getting their new pet a petpet as a friend should be the new owner's first task. Whichever way you choose is up to you.
